Charleston is the second largest and first oldest city in South Carolina. The historic center of the city is located on a peninsula formed by two rivers, the Ashley and Cooper, flowing into the Atlantic. During the Civil War, the city was captured without noticeable damage, so Old Charleston retains century-old buildings, beautiful churches whose spires rise above the low city limits, and a colorful harbor. Charleston resembles its neighbor, Savannah, in atmosphere of the good old South.
The first English settlement in South Carolina was “Charles Town” – Charleston. It was founded in 1670 on the Atlantic Ocean, between the mouths of Ashley and Cooper. A major trading port, it grew rich by the day, trading indigo, rice, and cotton. The city grew and prospered until A. Lincoln won another election. South Carolina (Charleston was the state capital) instantly announced that it was seceding from the young United States.
The northerners held only Fort Sumter, protecting Charleston harbor from sea and land. Southerners thought the government troops were wrong and after a fierce bombing raid seized the fort. Thus began the American Civil War. Today it is a relatively large (about 130,000 inhabitants) city that lives mainly from tourism. But the city is growing: in the past 15 years its population has increased by almost 30,000 people.
